What’s on offer at this Rally ?
People have been coming and going across the Moorlands since the year dot. Often forgotten, the Staffordshire Moorlands has turned up some spectacular finds, not least the Staffordshire Moorlands Patera.
On site, we have part of an ancient drovers route. As the section crosses the river it would have made a natural resting spot. Many trade routes passed through the Staffordshire Moorlands.
One field contained an old school, long gone with just a few stones remaining to mark where it once was. We found a couple of old musket balls whilst stone picking once. What really went on there ?
There are the remains of a couple of tiny buildings (possibly shepherds huts) and a strange mound (pictured below). Buxton (an ancient roman town) is located just 6 miles away, so it is likely that the Romans travelled this way.
This part of the Staffordshire Moorlands was renowned in days gone by for lawlessness, counterfeiting, border running and all round skulduggery. The term Flash Harry was thought to have originated from the activities of Flash residents, the highest village in England on the border with 3 counties. Flash is a stones throw away. Who knows what ill gotten gains were buried.
